On Wednesday, 19 February 2025, the Energy Transition Partnership (ETP) for the EU Fisheries and Aquaculture sector, under the European Commission’s DG MARE, hosted a pivotal hybrid workshop titled “Navigating the Energy Transition: Strategic Goals for Resilient and Sustainable Aquaculture”. The workshop, held from 09:00 to 13:30 CET, brought together stakeholders from across the sector to engage in informed discussions and develop actionable strategies for the energy transition within inland and offshore aquaculture.
Background and Purpose
This workshop was part of an ongoing series organised by the Energy Transition Partnership, launched on 16 June 2023. Building on the success of previous workshops focused on small-scale coastal fisheries (SSCF), large-scale fisheries (LSF), and distant water fleets (DWF), this session aimed to complement those discussions by addressing the specific challenges faced by inland and offshore aquaculture.
As the EU sets its sights on a carbon-neutral future, the aquaculture sector plays a crucial role in achieving these goals. The workshop provided a platform for exploring the strategic steps needed for the sector to contribute to the energy transition while ensuring resilience and sustainability
.
Workshop Objectives and Key Deliverables
The primary objectives of the workshop were to:
- Identify Challenges and Needs
Participants analysed the barriers preventing the successful energy transition in inland and offshore aquaculture. Discussions highlighted both sector-specific obstacles and broader issues that hinder progress towards a greener, more sustainable future for the sector. - Develop Concrete Pathways
Attendees were tasked with proposing actionable solutions for short-term, mid-term, and long-term implementation. - Showcase Innovations and Best Practices
Real-world case studies from across Europe were presented as examples of innovation and successful energy transition practices. These case studies not only inspired but also provided practical models for stakeholders to replicate in their own operations.
The workshop discussions will directly inform the design of the Energy Transition Roadmap 2050 for EU fisheries and aquaculture, helping to shape the future direction of the sector.
