The European algae sector is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. Since its launch in 2022 by the European Commission, and as the flagship algae project of DG MARE, EU4Algae has played a key role in supporting the development and growth of Europe’s algae sector. With nearly 1,000 stakeholders engaged across seven dedicated Working Groups, the initiative fostered sustainable algae production across food, feed, materials, and ecosystem services.

The booklet also explores EU4Algae’s alignment with the EU Algae Initiative, a strategic framework launched in November 2022 to drive policy actions for a regenerative and innovative algae sector. The EU Parliament’s endorsement of this initiative in May 2023 underscores algae’s growing importance in the EU’s sustainability goals.
