Having started in 2023 with a series of activities, EU4Algae’s Consumer Awareness & Acceptance initiative aims to increase awareness and acceptance of algae among consumers. Given the growing need for sustainable living and eco-friendly choices, algae are emerging as a powerhouse of potential.
With a revamped image, the EU4Algae Quiz is meant to gauge public sentiment towards algae-based products. More specifically, help increase the level of consumer’s algae-related knowledge and preferences for algae products, as well as promote awareness and acceptance of algae products.

The new Quiz results are in!
As for the latest results obtained from the EU4Algae Quiz, they gleaned from 96 respondents between September 29, 2023, and February 2, 2024, shed light on current perceptions and the path forward for increasing awareness and acceptance of algae.
When it comes to Demographic Insights, the respondents spanned various age groups, with the most common age range being 25-34 years old, closely followed by 35-44 years old. This indicates a broad spectrum of interest and potential consumers across different stages of life.
Concerning the Current Adoption and Barriers, over half of the respondents (53%) reported regularly purchasing algae-based products, indicating a significant existing market. However, for those who haven't delved into algae consumption, the primary barriers were identified as lack of availability and insufficient knowledge about algae products. This highlights a crucial gap in accessibility and education that needs to be addressed to unlock the full potential of algae-based solutions.
Encouragingly, the answers of respondents in terms of Future Intentions and Preferences showcased that two-thirds expressed a high likelihood of trying new algae-based products in the future. Among the preferred types of products, food and biopackaging emerged as clear frontrunners, showcasing the versatile applications of algae across various industries.
Feedback from current consumers on Satisfaction and Awareness is overwhelmingly positive, with 75% expressing satisfaction with the algae-based products they've tried, and 36% reporting being very satisfied. Moreover, a significant majority of respondents demonstrated awareness of the nutritional properties of algae-based food products, indicating a growing understanding of the benefits associated with algae consumption.
Despite the enthusiasm and satisfaction among current consumers, challenges remain. Precisely related to Challenges and Opportunities many respondents voiced difficulties in finding algae-based products and noted a lack of clear information about these products. Addressing these challenges through improved availability and targeted education campaigns will be essential in fostering broader acceptance and uptake of algae-based solutions.
What’s next?
The EU4Algae Quiz results offer valuable insights into the current landscape of consumer awareness and acceptance of algae-based products. While there is evident enthusiasm and satisfaction among existing consumers, there are significant opportunities to bridge the gap for those who have yet to embrace algae. By addressing barriers to accessibility and enhancing educational efforts, we can pave the way for a more sustainable future powered by the remarkable potential of algae.
