EU4Algae Social Media Consumer's Campaign Recap: Cook, Share, Inspire – Discovering the Power of Algae

In May, EU4Algae launched a social media campaign on DG MARE and CINEA’s platforms, encouraging consumers to get creative in the kitchen and share their culinary creations featuring this nutritious superfood.

As part of a journey to revolutionise the perception of algae as a food source, EU4Algae launched a Social Media Campaign in May to promote awareness of algae to consumers. This campaign invited consumers to get creative in the kitchen and share their culinary creations featuring this nutritious superfood.

Launched on the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) and the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency’s (CINEA) social media platforms, the initiative aimed to engage and inspire food enthusiasts. Participants were invited to prepare and showcase their favourite dishes incorporating algae on their own social media accounts using #EU4Algae. Whether it's a savoury seaweed salad, a spirulina smoothie, or a nori-wrapped sushi roll, every dish shared can contribute to the movement towards sustainable eating practices.

The first step of the campaign was to film an official video in collaboration with David Jesus, owner and chef of Seiva, and Nuno Castro, owner and chef of Fava Tonka, both located in Leça da Palmeira, Portugal.

Several posts were made on DG MARE and CINEA’s respective social media accounts, spotlighting the benefits and versatility of algae as a culinary ingredient, and even providing a recipe suggestion to further foster a sense of community and shared purpose.

The EU4Algae Social Media Consumer's Campaign marks a significant stride in reshaping the narrative around algae, not just as a sustainable food source but as an integral part of modern cuisine. The campaign aimed to foster a community dedicated to innovative and eco-friendly eating practices by engaging food enthusiasts and culinary creators across Europe. The hope is to see a ripple effect that extends beyond social media, inspiring a broader shift towards sustainable consumption.
