EU4Algae Digest Stories: Breakthroughs in Algae Innovation

We highlight the innovative companies driving algae innovation forward. Keep reading to discover the exciting developments we have put together.

EU4Algae serves as an information hub for the algae sector, providing stakeholders with updates on the latest news, events, and developments in the algae industry.

In these Digest Stories, we aim to showcase algae innovations addressing sustainability challenges while enabling economic growth. This first edition covers algae innovations related to sectors such as Agrifood, Industry & Goods, and Utilities (Water, Energy, Waste) & Sustainable Agriculture.

Putting Plant-Based and Protein-Rich Chlorella Algae To Good Use

Aliga Microalgae, a Danish company, specialises in producing vegan, plant-based, protein-rich Chlorella algae. They recently introduced a groundbreaking chlorophyll-free, white Chlorella ingredient with a neutral flavour and colour, perfect for a wide range of food, feed, and dietary supplements.

This innovative ingredient, made solely from fermented and dried Chlorella, is a vegan, non-GMO superfood packed with vitamins, minerals, fibres, proteins, and essential amino and fatty acids. Its improved taste and versatility open up new possibilities for use in analogues, savoury dishes, baked goods, and dairy alternatives, overcoming previous limitations due to Chlorella's strong flavour and chlorophyll content.

Reducing Single-Use Plastic Pollution with Seaweed-Based Biopackaging

Biopac, an Indonesian company, specialises in creating single-use, ecofriendly packaging to help decrease climate change due to plastic waste pollution and CO2 emissions.

Their packaging is made from seaweed, which efficiently absorbs CO2 and converts it into biomass during the photosynthesis process. The products are available as sheet wrapping, sachets, gussets, pouches, shopping bags, and rolls. Biopac also provides sealing and printing services using their eco-friendly seaweed-based ink.

A Cultivation Technology That Enables Industrial-Scale Microalgae Biomass Production

SunOleo, a French company, has developed an innovative photobioreactor to overcome the technical challenges that slow down the industrialisation of microalgae cultivation for sectors such as feed, fuels, and plastics.

Their technology allows for large-scale microalgae cultivation in a controlled environment. SunOleo photobioreactors are simple microalgae cultivation tanks with immersed inflatable light wells that bring sunlight up to 6 meters deep. This closed cultivation system ensures better product quality than open ponds and features a simple design with inexpensive light wells, reducing production costs and allowing for economies of scale.
