Edonia, a pioneering French startup in plant-based meat alternatives, has successfully secured €2 million in funding, led by Asterion Ventures. The funding will help support the commercialization of Edonia's innovative microalgae-based products, which offer a sustainable protein option with CO2 emissions 40 times lower than conventional meat and three times lower than soy-based products.

Utilising microalgae such as spirulina and chlorella – already approved for use in the EU – Edonia is set to expedite its products' market entry. Additionally, microalgae can be cultivated using wastewater from other food industries, adding value to the supply chain and enhancing sustainability.

In a press release from the startup, Hugo Valentin, CEO of Edonia, emphasized the dual goal of environmental responsibility and high product quality in the company’s mission. He stated:

At a time of climate emergency, when 34 percent of greenhouse gas emissions are generated by our food, the greening of our plates needs to accelerate. Microalgae, known for their nutritional and ecological virtues, can be a real tool for food industry professionals in this respect. But it has to taste good! That's what we are offering: delicious protein ingredients that are hyper-nutritious, and with very little processing or pollutants.”
