Showcasing the Impact of Algae Research: Data Highlights
To emphasize the ongoing development of the algae sector in the EU, EU4Algae has mapped and analysed algae-related research projects. Structured factsheets were created to showcase the latest findings, innovations, and knowledge.
These factsheets cover 10 impactful projects that represent diverse advancements in algae research. The full list includes: SeaMark, AlgaeProBANOS, LOCALITY, NOVAFOODIES, AlgaeFood, SISTERS, ZEROW, CIRCALGAE, BlueBioClusters, and Blue Bio Techpreneurs.
Below are examples of some of the featured projects, each demonstrating unique contributions to the algae sector:
- SeaMark: Focused on leveraging the potential of macroalgae as an industrialised feedstock, enhancing market knowledge, and strengthening the competitiveness of the EU’s blue bioeconomy, among others. Outputs include 12 products for high- and low-value markets (food, feed, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, medical devices), with five additional outputs reached.
- AlgaeProBANOS: Aimed to create products, meet market demands, and accelerate growth for algae-based products. Outputs include products derived from macro- and microalgae, alongside innovative processing methods, with six more outputs achieved.
- LOCALITY: Concentrated on developing circular, sustainable value chains and bringing algae-based products to regional and global markets. Outputs include industrial ecosystems and the harvesting of up to 500kg of dry seaweed or cyanobacterial biomass, with five additional outputs delivered.
- BlueBioClusters: Designed to integrate circular value chains within the blue bioeconomy and provide regional actors access to cutting-edge technologies. Outputs include seven deliverables, such as data collection and monitoring systems and a user manual for the Ecosystem Approach Wheel.
- Blue Bio Techpreneurs: Promoted collaboration between academia and the private sector to inspire students, young professionals, and entrepreneurs to pursue blue careers. Achievements include five outputs, such as initiatives empowering women in the sector and providing training, upskilling, and mentoring opportunities.
