EU4Algae serves as an information hub for the algae sector, delivering the latest news, events, and developments to stakeholders interested in advancing algae-based solutions.

In this edition of Digest Stories, we aim to showcase algae innovations addressing sustainability challenges and driving economic growth. This second edition covers algae innovations across sectors like Agrifood, Industry & Goods, and Cleantech.

Sustainable protein production from microalgae

Kyanos, a French company, specialises in producing renewable, sustainable, and disruptive microalgae-based protein (AFA) inspired by natural ecosystems. Using patented microbial symbiosis technology, Kyanos enhances production, ensures traceability, and reduces contamination, all without the need for arable land, fertilisers, excess water, antibiotics, or pesticides. It is the first company to produce and commercialize AFA microalgae, which has significant potential as a daily food source.

Pioneering sustainable homeware from seaweed

Notpla, a UK-based company, has created an innovative solution with its Notpla Film sachets for homeware and laundry products. These flexible, seaweed-based sachets are ideal for single-use dry items and soluble products. Unlike conventional plastic packaging, Notpla Film biodegrades without releasing harmful microplastics. Available in cold-water soluble and compostable versions, the film integrates easily into existing supply chains.

Air purification technology using microalgae

Biomitech, a French company, develops air purification systems using green technology for urban, indoor, and industrial settings. Their BioUrban system, based on microalgae, transforms pollutants like carbon monoxide and nitrogen into oxygen and biomass through photosynthesis. The system processes 3,200 cubic meters of polluted air per hour, helping to clean the environment.
