Algae consumption on the rise
The latest Eurobarometer survey on EU consumer habits regarding fishery and aquaculture products reveals new insights into fish and seafood consumption trends – including attitudes towards seaweed and algae-based products.
According to the survey, two-thirds of respondents have consumed algae-based products at least once in the past year, primarily in sushi rolls and wraps. While seaweed and algae have yet to become mainstream in European diets, consumer interest is growing:
- Half of the respondents enjoy the taste of algae products.
- One-third believe algae offer health benefits.
Cost and convenience drive purchasing decisions
The survey also highlights shifting consumption patterns for fishery and aquaculture products:
- Price has overtaken appearance as the most influential factor in purchasing decisions (55%).
- Frozen and tinned seafood are surpassing fresh options due to affordability and convenience.
- Proximity to the sea impacts consumption: 79% of respondents living within 5 km of the coast eat seafood monthly, compared to 49% living over 200 km away.
What does this mean for algae?
As interest in sustainable and alternative food sources grows, algae-based products could gain traction among European consumers. With affordability and clear labelling emerging as key factors in purchasing decisions, the algae sector has opportunities to expand by addressing these consumer needs.
