The European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginijus Sinkevičius visited the elementary School Dr JP Thijsse in Den Helder to grant it the first certificate of a European Blue School on the occasion of the European Maritime Day conference on 20 May 2021.

The school pupils had worked on a project called “The Fishery.” Their challenge “Find the Blue” had been to get to know the entire local fishing sector. The school has also included marine topics in its curriculum recently.

The Commissioner was welcomed by the entire school with fishery songs. The pupils showed him their project and they engaged together in learning fun activities.

The Dr JP Thijsse school has been the first of 36 schools that submitted their project to become a EU Blue School. These schools will receive their certification on 9 June.
