Why Seagrass Matters
World Seagrass Day is celebrated each year to highlight the vital role of seagrasses in marine biodiversity, their contributions to sustainable development, and their impact on climate change mitigation and adaptation. It also raises awareness of the threats they face and the need for their protection.
Seagrass meadows are underwater powerhouses, providing shelter and food for countless marine species, including fish, crustaceans, and molluscs. They serve as vital nursery grounds for commercially important fish, supporting both biodiversity and sustainable fisheries.
Beyond marine life, seagrass helps maintain ocean health by stabilising coastlines, preventing erosion, and filtering pollutants. As natural carbon sinks, they absorb and store carbon dioxide, playing a key role in climate change mitigation. Through photosynthesis, they also generate oxygen, enriching marine habitats and promoting a thriving ecosystem.
The Purpose of World Seagrass Day
Recognising the urgent need to protect seagrass ecosystems, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) declared 1 March as World Seagrass Day in 2022, with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) facilitating its observance. This annual event raises awareness of the threats facing seagrass and underscores its importance in marine conservation and sustainable development.
