The project “Blue Detectives on Duty” was carried out with 9-year-old primary school students to explore marine ecosystems and understand the connection between human activities and ocean health. Although our school is located inland, the project aimed to show students that oceans are connected to their daily lives through water systems.
The main objectives were to develop ocean literacy, raise awareness about marine biodiversity, and help students understand the impact of pollution and climate change on seas.
During the project, students participated in a series of structured weekly activities. In the first week, they explored marine species from the Aegean and Marmara Seas and wrote short stories from the perspective of a sea creature. In the following weeks, they investigated how local pollution can reach the sea, conducted simple experiments on water contamination, and observed environmental impacts.
Students also collected waste materials and reused them to create marine-themed artworks such as sea animals and underwater scenes. Additionally, they designed posters, slogans, and awareness campaigns to promote the protection of water resources.
The project followed a project-based and interdisciplinary approach, integrating science, art, and language skills. Students worked collaboratively, discussed real-life environmental problems, and proposed solutions. Hands-on activities and creative expression were key elements of the learning process.
As concrete outcomes, students produced stories, posters, and recycled art products. They presented their work through classroom exhibitions and explained how human actions affect marine ecosystems.
Through this project, students developed a clear understanding of the link between land and ocean and became more responsible towards protecting water and marine environments.
