BLUEQ Joint Pilot Action - Mapping seagrass meadows

Short description of the action

The BLUEQ Joint Pilot Action is an advanced, collaborative effort to preserve and restore blue carbon ecosystems. The Pilot Action will take place at the Karaburun Sazan National Marine Park (Albania), a highly ecologically important study site, hosting several priority habitats and species. The BLUEQ Joint Pilot Action includes detailed and accurate habitat mapping of the Posidonia oceanica meadows extent, in the case studies, using state-of-the-art remote sensing techniques, including satellite and UAS-acquired high-resolution imagery. In-situ habitat mapping and carbon stock measurements will supplement the above images, creating a comprehensive dataset of high-resolution information, not currently available. The use of the acquired dataset in a GIS-based tool that converts the spatial extent of seagrass meadows to stored carbon units while at the same time providing several layers of information on habitat characteristics and services, such as biodiversity and ecological status, constitutes the BLUEQ Joint Developed Solution. The BLUEQ Joint Developed Solution will be tailored to the needs of decision-makers and will develop the roadmap towards a Blue Carbon Strategy in the Adriatic-Ionian region.
