The main objective of this action is to better define the concentrations and distributions of MPs along the Tunisian coasts. A deeper understanding of MP types, sources, and transfer mechanisms, as well as the different microorganisms adsorbed on these MPs, will enable the selection of effective management approachs of MPs pollution. The goal of this action is to create a database on MPs in four places along the Tunisian coasts in order to better understand their dispersion across a land-sea continuum (beach-sea, river-sea).
The activity also aims to explore new methods for identifying and assessing the different MPs in two different matrices (water and sediments), as well as the complexation processes of MPs with planktonic and bentic organisms and chemical contaminants. Exploratory studies of bacterial and eukaryotic diversity on microplastic interfaces will be also conducted in order to examine the communities that develop there and which might provide information on possible biodegradation.
