Clean Up Montenegro

Every year, on the occasion of the International Coastal Cleanup Day, actions are organized across Montenegro in cooperation with local NGOs, civic movements, and the public and private sectors. This event represents the largest annual volunteer initiative in the country, primarily focused on cleaning the shores of rivers, lakes, and the sea. One of its main goals is to raise awareness about the harmful impact of single-use plastics and to prevent their improper disposal. At all cleanup sites, collected waste is sorted and analyzed using the #breakfreefromplastic methodology – Brand Audit, which identifies the companies whose products contribute most to plastic pollution. In this way, the initiative goes beyond cleaning the shores, serving also as a form of citizen science that advocates for more responsible production and a reduction in single-use plastics. By connecting local activities with national and global campaigns, participants send a strong message that protecting shorelines and aquatic ecosystems is essential for tackling plastic waste and preserving nature.
