The project Research and Preservation of Water Resources in the Sokyriany Community connects students with their local “blue” environment by studying water ecosystems, pollution sources, and conservation methods. The initiative aims to enhance water and ocean literacy among youth and strengthen their understanding of the Black Sea basin’s importance to local and European sustainability.
Students investigated the quality and usage of local water bodies through sampling, monitoring, and interviews with residents. They applied scientific methods to measure pH, turbidity, and nitrate levels, analysed domestic and agricultural water use, and assessed pollution risks. The project incorporated open-science tools for data sharing and collaborative analysis with the NGO Ukrainian Ecostations Network.
Educational activities included thematic lessons on hydrology, biodiversity, and climate change; creative workshops where students produced posters, videos, and models illustrating water protection; and outreach actions with parents and local authorities. A public exhibition presented students’ findings and recommendations to improve water conservation practices.
The project applies an interdisciplinary approach combining natural sciences, geography, art, and civic education. It fosters environmental responsibility and practical understanding of the land–sea relationship, linking local river ecosystems to the Black Sea. The initiative promotes collaboration between schools and civil society organisations, providing authentic learning experiences and inspiring long-term community engagement in environmental stewardship.
