The main goals of the project are to raise students’ awareness of the effects of overfishing, promote sustainable seafood choices, and encourage active citizenship in protecting the marine environment. The project connects students with the local community, organizations, professionals, and other schools in Greece and abroad, fostering both local and European perspectives on sustainability.
Students work collaboratively through inquiry-based and experiential learning.
Last year, 80 students in grades 2 and 3 participated in groups in various activities, such as:
-Online research on overfishing and non-selective fishing methods, sustainability labels that indicate responsible fishing practices, and marine species threatened by overfishing.
-A visit to the Environmental Education Center in Ierapetra, Crete, where they participated in a program on nutrition and environmental responsibility.
-Visits to aquariums in Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu, where they observed the marine biodiversity.
During this school year, another 80 students in this year's 2nd grade are carrying out the following activities:
-Distributing questionnaires to students, parents, and teachers about sustainable fishing and seafood consumption.
-Collaborating with the Junior High Schools of Kasos and Pompia (Heraklion, Crete), both European Blue Schools, to develop a digital cookbook featuring local seafood recipes, cooking methods, and species characteristics from Thessaloniki, Kasos, and Crete.
-Visiting the Axios–Loudias–Aliakmon National Park to observe biodiversity, participate in a beach cleanup, and record collected items with the Park Management Authority.
-Producing a poster with photos of fish commonly consumed in Greece and a QR code linking to details on each species (description, minimum legal size, and allowed consumption period). The poster will be displayed in central school areas.
Part of the project’s materials will also be presented at a partner German school through an Erasmus+ program.
The project will conclude with an open “Sea Day” event involving neighboring schools, promoting ocean awareness and community participation.
