The Blue Projects Depot showcases innovative blue school projects that foster collaboration through open-schooling methodologies, connecting students and their teachers with the wider community — including public bodies, researchers, Blue Economy industry leaders, and local stakeholders — in support of the EU Mission: "Restore Our Oceans and Waters by 2030 " Our Call to Action is for leaders or participants in a Blue School project to share their story by submitting a short summary of a blue school project and its impact in promoting best practices:
* Protecting and restoring ecosystems and biodiversity – schools engaging in wetlands and riverbank restoration, marine litter surveys, and biodiversity monitoring with citizen science tools.
* Preventing and eliminating pollution – classroom-to-community initiatives that measure household waste, reduce single-use plastics, and track nutrient runoff into local rivers and seas.
* Making the blue economy carbon-neutral and circular – student innovation challenges that develop ideas for sustainable seafood tourism, circular aquaculture, and energy-efficient coastal practices.
* Contributing to an ocean and waters knowledge system – schools sharing data with EMODnet, Copernicus, and national water monitoring frameworks to strengthen Europe’s collective ocean intelligence.
* Mobilising the public – awareness campaigns, exhibitions, and open days where students present findings to families, policymakers, and citizens, ensuring that local communities are part of the solution.
Together, these projects show that education is not confined to classrooms—it extends into society, fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and action. By linking learning with community engagement, formal education ecosystems demonstrate how youth participation can accelerate Europe’s transition to healthy waters and a sustainable blue economy. Selected projects will be showcased on an open-source platform, inspiring schools and communities across Europe to join the movement for healthy, resilient oceans and waters.
Across Europe, schools are becoming powerful hubs for ocean literacy and sustainability by adopting open-schooling methodologies. These innovative Blue School projects connect students and teachers with their communities—partnering with public authorities, researchers, Blue Economy industries, NGOs, and local citizens—to deliver real-world actions that contribute to the EU Mission “Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030.” Blue Schools empower young people to act as changemakers. Students not only learn about oceans and freshwater systems, but also design and implement projects that protect ecosystems, prevent pollution, and promote sustainability. Teachers are supported with co-created modules, citizen science activities, and access to community expertise, while municipalities and industry partners benefit from youth-driven innovation.
