Project Summary:
Our school, located in Ergani district of Diyarbakır (Southeastern Turkey), will implement a transdisciplinary project titled "From the River to the Future: Exploring Dicle's Waters." The project aims to foster water literacy, ecological awareness, and active citizenship among students by focusing on the Dicle (Tigris) River ecosystem and its historical surroundings such as the prehistoric site of Çayönü.
Objectives:
To increase students' awareness of local freshwater resources, specifically the Dicle River, through scientific and cultural exploration.
To integrate water literacy into school curricula through field studies, citizen science, and creative learning activities.
To encourage environmental stewardship, sustainable thinking, and collaborative problem-solving among students.
To engage in international collaboration via the eTwinning platform and NEBS (Network of European Blue Schools) goals.
Main Activities:
Field Research: Students will visit the Dicle River and Çayönü archaeological site to observe biodiversity and water conditions.
Water Quality Monitoring: Students will perform basic water tests (pH, temperature, turbidity) with guidance from local experts and analyze results.
STEAM Workshops: Design-based learning activities focusing on sustainable water use, flood prevention, and eco-friendly solutions.
Community Engagement: Awareness campaigns, student-created posters, and local exhibitions will inform the public about water issues.
International Collaboration: We will organize virtual meetings and common tasks with our eTwinning partners from Europe, comparing river systems and water problems across countries.
Final Product: A digital magazine and short documentary will be produced by students to showcase their learning journey and outcomes.
Expected Impact:
Students will develop critical thinking, scientific curiosity, and eco-literacy skills.
Teachers will gain capacity in interdisciplinary environmental education through participatory learning methods.
Families and local communities will be more aware of water conservation issues.
The project will contribute to the EU Mission "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030" by linking local action to global goals.
This initiative will be a gateway for our school to become a member of the Network of European Blue Schools and establish long-term international partnerships for sustainability-focused education.
