Saving Water Begins in the Mind

To protect marine and freshwater ecosystems, prevent water pollution, and transform the blue economy into a sustainable and carbon-neutral structure, we will develop a holistic model based on awareness, citizen science, and education with the participation of 10-14 year-old students, teachers, and local stakeholders.
Expected Impacts:
Developing behavioral awareness and environmental responsibility at an early age regarding the protection of sensitive ecosystems such as seas, lakes, rivers, and wetlands.
Contributing to the protection of ocean and water systems through easily replicable citizen science projects involving young people and teachers.
Disseminating locally initiated activities in coordination with national and EU Mission Ocean and Waters policies.
Strengthening knowledge systems on sustainable blue economy and climate-friendly practices through Education and training
Action Description and Components:
1.Water Watchers Training Program
Ocean and water literacy training will be provided to students in participating schools under the guidance of teachers.The program will cover the themes of the water cycle,water footprint,microplastics,biodiversity, carbon emissions, and the blue economy.
Activity:Ecosystem posters, animation-based lessons, virtual museums.
Output:Student-teacher handbook and digital learning modules.
2.Citizen Science Workshops and Water Monitoring Activities
Students and volunteer teachers will conduct citizen science activities monitoring indicators such as microplastics, water pH, temperature, and biodiversity in local ponds, streams, or coastal areas.
Activity:Data collection and analysis
Output:Environmental awareness map for local water resources.
3.Value Water Campaign
Student-designed poster, short video, and storytelling competitions will be organized to raise public awareness about water resource protection.
Activity:In-school exhibitions, social media activities, and collaboration with local government.
Output:Highly interactive digital content and disseminateable awareness models.
4.Youth Leadership and Water Ambassadors Network
Selected students will be trained as "Water Ambassadors" and will take over water literacy training in their schools, playing a role in disseminating it.
Activity:Young leader training camp, teacher-led mentorship.
Output:Local communities of practice and youth leadership networks.
Mission Ocean and Waters Policy Alignment and Contributions:
Protecting and restoring ecosystems: Habitat awareness and improvement recommendations are developed through monitoring and nature-based education conducted in local water areas.
Pollution prevention: Pollution awareness is raised through microplastic measurements and public awareness campaigns.
Sustaining the blue economy: Blue economy topics are integrated into the curriculum to support knowledge-based transformation.
Data and information systems: Student-led collection and interpretation of local data contributes to open data systems.
Participation: Youth leadership, family-environment interaction, and social media campaigns are strengthened for social participation. Scaling and Replication of Solutions:
Developed educational materials and implementation models will be made openly available for use by other schools. The solutions developed by students will be disseminated through platforms such as eTwinning, Scientix, and the Youth Portal.
