- Description
The project aims to restore and protect the Posidonia oceanica meadows in the Silent Bay (Baia del Silenzio), Sestri Levante, Italy, an area of high ecological and social value located between two Natura 2000 marine sites: “Fondali di Punta Manara” and “Fondali di Punta Sestri.” Decades of mooring activities, pier construction, and coastal erosion have severely degraded the seagrass meadows, leading to biodiversity loss and habitat decline. The goal of the project is to design and test nature-based mooring systems that prevent further mechanical damage while promoting seagrass recovery. Activities include mapping Posidonia meadows, assessing ecological impacts, engaging local stakeholders, and developing eco-friendly mooring blocks designed as artificial reefs. These blocks will anchor buoys while providing shelter for marine species and allowing seagrass to grow over them, enhancing both biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. The project benefits local communities, policymakers, and tourists through healthier marine habitats, improved coastal protection, and eco-tourism opportunities.
