Since 2019 and guided by the SDGs, we have been working to transform our school to reintroduce nature within it with the aim of improving biodiversity and benefiting the well-being of the students, staff and the local community, as well as extending the learning spaces beyond the classroom. This year our focus is on re-connecting the school community with the sea and its role in our local area and heritage.
Objective 1. Learn about our maritime heritage and the industries involved as well as their contribution to the sustainable development of our local economy.
Activity 1. Talks from parents and experts that work in industries involved in the blue economy (fishery, tourism, port, etc.) adapted to each age group.
Activity 2. Field trips to the Museum of the Sea, the port and the fish market to further explore the fishery industry that is part of the local heritage.
Objective 2. Raise awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Activity 1. Educational activities in the library aimed at encouraging students to read about the sea (e.g. thematic shelves and book readings adapted to different age groups).
Activity 2. Observation of the life cycle of flora and fauna in our permaculture pond across the seasons.
Activity 3. Student-led research projects with display of posters and presentations for the school community.
Activity 4. Field trips to learn about biodiversity in Vigo estuary, river Lagares, isles of San Simon and Ons.
Objective 3. Raise awareness of our role as consumers in plastic consumption and pollution and encourage an active role in the care of the sea.
Activity 1. School-wide craft projects using waste as art resources (e.g. Christmas decorations, Carnival costumes).
Activity 2. Field trips to clean up the beaches nearby the school (Calzoa, Fontaiña) in collaboration with local partners (AMICOS).
