Transitioning towards low-impact carbon-neutral fisheries

Short description of the action

The project investigates to what extent a transition towards low-impact carbon neutral fisheries for reduced environmental impact is practically feasible and to what extent the management options in such a context will support an economically viable and ecologically sustainable fisheries sector.

The study includes the Danish fishing fleet as a pilot study and take the existing Danish fleet structure as a starting point by i) assessing baseline fuel consumption for different fisheries, gear uses, spatial fishing behavior in response to spatial management and establishing concept vessels, ii) determining possible innovative measures and transitions based on fishing capacity and catchability of fish and preferred habitats and habitats for fishing and iii) to assess technical, economic and social feasibility for reduced emissions and environmental impacts in fishing. The evaluation will include quantifying the transition costs of new technologies, fishing methods and management strategies to make them affordable for the fishery.
