The quantity and quality of water resources are critical challenges in many European regions, driven by climate change and human activities. BOOST-IN, a Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded by the Horizon Europe programme, aims to tackle these issues by fostering technological innovation, governance improvements, and shifts in mindsets and organizational structures. By applying circular economy principles, the project will enhance water reuse and the recovery of valuable materials such as energy and nutrients.
Despite the benefits, several barriers—technological, economic, knowledge-based, and social perception—still hinder the widespread implementation of Water Circular Economy Solutions (WACES). BOOST-IN will overcome these challenges through an innovative dynamic funnel method that effectively identifies, selects, and transfers the most promising WACES to improve water cycle management.
The project will develop and test its approach in six Regions of Opportunity across Europe (Spain, Greece, Germany, France, Italy, and Bulgaria). Through co-creation workshops, BOOST-IN will raise public awareness, address implementation barriers, and design risk management plans. At the EU level, the project will establish an active stakeholder network and develop action plans featuring tailored training and education programs for water professionals.
To accelerate market adoption and maximize impact, BOOST-IN will provide expertise on business models, develop standardized quality criteria, and strengthen connections between solution providers and potential investors. Moreover, the project will enhance the Water Europe Marketplace platform, facilitating project clustering, B2B matchmaking, and the selection of appropriate WACES solutions tailored to user needs.
By integrating innovation, collaboration, and market-driven strategies, BOOST-IN will drive a transformative shift towards a more sustainable and resilient water sector in Europe.
