All 3300 children the eight schools in Connect Academy Trust live in the Torbay and Plymouth area, but their knowledge of the ocean and its importance in our global balance is limited.
The objective of the project is to deliver our newly written Ocean Conservation Curriculum (OCC), ensuring all Connect children fully understand the essential part the ocean plays in our world. The OCC will be delivered to all children, so that that by age 11, each child will have experienced seven OCC units of learning and know the importance of each of the seven Ocean Literacy Principles. It is important to develop children's scientific understanding through a cohesive framework. The content of the OCC will be progressive, building on prior learning and linked to other aspects of the curriculum. By using Ocean Literacy as a globally recognised vehicle, there is a common structure for this project.
The units of learning have been written by teachers (Ocean Champions) working closely with local ocean science-based organisations (Ocean Experts). Our partners involved are; the Ocean Conservation Trust, The Marine Biological Association and Plymouth Marine Laboratory.

Our approach is to use Ocean Literacy as a starting point and use both our local context and the global situation to develop high quality units of learning which will be delivered by all teachers. The intention is to make the OCC available to schools outside of our Trust.
Connect Academy Trust is a family of values-based schools: Cockington Primary School, Eden Park Primary School, Eggbuckland Vale Primary School, Leigham Primary School, Manadon Vale Primary School, Preston Primary School, Thornbury Primary School and Widey Court Primary School. All children in these schools will have access to the OCC and are applying to become a European Blue School as part of this project.
