The BlueTwinning project, for the 2024-2025 academic year, seeks to raise awareness among students in the interior of the peninsula about the protection and recovery of marine biodiversity and ocean sustainability through a school twinning system between schools in Mallorca and schools in Madrid and Guadalajara. This proposal is developed through a Service-Learning (ApS) program at the University of Alcalá. Through a transversal subject, students from different degrees are trained as educators of the marine environment, who have then carried out training activities in secondary and primary schools.
Throughout the course, various activities have been carried out, including a waste characterization workshop with the NGO Paisaje Limpio, the launch of an awareness campaign under the slogan “The sea starts here”, and a workshop on circular economy and blue economy based on the waste collected on the beaches of Mallorca, with the collaboration of companies in the sector such as Futuralga, Cholitas, Seaqual and Gravity Wave.
In addition, workshops were held on gender equality in the fishing sector, as well as a workshop focused on the impact of microplastics on microorganisms. Finally, researchers from the CSIC and the IEO (Spanish Institute of Oceanography) offered the workshop “Life on a tuna boat”, providing a scientific and practical perspective on sustainable fishing.
These activities seek to raise awareness among students about the protection of marine biodiversity, sustainable economy and gender equality in the fishing sector. The twinned centers in Mallorca enrich the experience through monthly monitoring in protected areas, sending information and materials to the mainland, thus connecting the sea with the classrooms in the interior of the peninsula. The certification of the four inland educational centers will make it possible to generate a network of blue sea-land schools (BlueTwinning).
