Giov & Go - A free-flowing Giovenco

Short description of the action

The project focuses on the removal of five weirs and adjacent concrete walls along the Giovenco River, achieving the reconnection of a total of 11.2 km (upstream and downstream) of previously fragmented river. This restoration will enhance biodiversity by improving critical habitats for key species such as the native white-clawed crayfish and Mediterranean trout, while also restoring and revitalizing the river’s natural dynamics. By promoting sediment transport, nutrient flow, and the re-establishment of riparian vegetation, this action ensures long-term ecological benefits and reinforces the river's resilience against environmental pressures. Additionally, the project was designed to serve as a pilot study, marking the first initiative of its kind in the Central Apennines. It now provides valuable guidelines for both the operational and administrative aspects of similar restoration efforts, offering a model for future projects in the region. To ensure community involvement and support, many communication activities were carried out, including public meetings with stakeholders, brochure, educational sessions with students, art and music event, 1 short film (in progress), and clean-up initiatives involving local and international volunteers.
