Coastal Upgrading, Regeneration and Resilience of Astakos

Short description of the action

The core interventions include constructing advanced seawalls and breakwaters to mitigate erosion and storm surge impacts, implementing beach nourishment to restore and maintain sandy coastal areas, and developing green infrastructure such as vegetated buffer zones and bioswales to manage runoff naturally and enhance biodiversity. In addition, the project will upgrade public spaces along the waterfront to improve their functionality and aesthetic appeal, creating a more resilient and attractive coastal environment.

Ecosystem restoration efforts will focus on replanting native vegetation, stabilizing dunes and estuarine areas, and rehabilitating degraded wetlands to support biodiversity and enhance the natural resilience of the area.

A pivotal component of the project is a coastal dynamics technical study being carried out by the municipality

in partnership with the specialized coastal dynamics expert consultant, Rogan. This study, funded through

the Filodimos 2 national program for Local Government investments, provides advanced analysis of

shoreline behavior, sediment transport, and hydrodynamic impacts. The insights gained from this study

inform the design of adaptive interventions and ensure their long-term effectiveness.

Another key intervention includes the development of a Green and Blue Marina Proposal, which integrates

digital management systems and renewable energy solutions, low-impact construction materials, and ecofriendly

facilities to support sustainable tourism and marine activities. This marina will serve as a hub for

economic activity while prioritizing environmental protection, aligning with the project’s goals for sustainable

development and resilience.

Through these actions, the project aims to transform Astakos into a model for sustainable coastal

regeneration in the Mediterranean region. By integrating cutting-edge technical solutions with community

engagement and policy alignment, the initiative will enhance climate resilience, promote sustainable

economic development, and ensure the long-term viability of the town’s coastal ecosystems and

infrastructure.

Project objectives

Develop and implement coastal defense mechanisms to mitigate erosion and flooding in the coastal zone of

Astakos.

Revitalize the urban waterfront with sustainable, green and nature-based infrastructure and community

participation in design solutions.

Enhance biodiversity conservation through habitat restoration and pollution reduction in the port area.

Promote sustainable economic practices, including eco-tourism and low-impact fisheries.
