The Biodiversity Gateway (BG) is a multidisciplinary infrastructure, both virtual and physical, with nodes across Italy. It transfers and implements the goals and research outputs of the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC), Italy’s first national center for biodiversity research, funded by the Ministry of University and Research through the EU’s NextGenerationEU program.
Led by the National Research Council (CNR), the Biodiversity Gateway fosters collaboration and innovation, making research accessible to a wide range of users. By connecting the scientific community with society, it transforms research into tangible value for citizens, innovators, and institutions.
The BG is contributing to the Mission Ocean & Waters‘ objectives through:
- collaboration among universities, research institutions, businesses, and industries by addressing the demand for biodiversity solutions and facilitating dialogue among stakeholders, including experts and policymakers to collaborate on shared challenges related to biodiversity;
- Promotion of a sustainable Impact: aligned with biodiversity initiatives, the BG supports a collaborative network for co-designing activities that merge scientific, educational, and social engagement. Outreach initiatives like lab tours, science cafés, seminars, and performances connect diverse audiences to biodiversity topics and the Mission’s objectives.
Internationalization and role within European Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters. The BG plays a key role in European Missions by bridging scientific knowledge and practical action. It connects research with local realities through tools like business models, partnerships, and capacity-building, empowering international stakeholders to translate European projects into impactful initiatives. This collaboration supports biodiversity-focused activities and amplifies Mission objectives across Italy, fostering sustainable development for future generations. Beyond biodiversity, the Gateway integrates objectives related to pollution reduction and the promotion of the blue economy, aligning with the Mission Objectives and it also emphasises data accessibility and digitalization.
-Engagement with Schools, Stakeholders, and Society. The BG engages schools and young audiences to inspire awareness and action on biodiversity, linking to the EU Mission Ocean and Waters. For stakeholders, it:
• Showcases Mission results through a showroom and office in Venice and other national nodes.
• Provides resources tailored to businesses, citizens, and regional coordinators.
• Facilitates joint actions and multi-level networking.
• Aligns EU and regional funding to strengthen biodiversity initiatives.
