Ichthyological research is the scientific study of fish, including their evolution, classification, habits, distribution, and relationship with their environment. The catchment area of a river is the area from where water flows into that river, including all its tributaries.
Ichthyological research of the Sava River catchment area includes studying the species of fish that inhabit the Sava River and its tributaries, their number, distribution, and survival strategies. This study also examines how human activities such as fishing, pollution, and dam construction influence fish populations.
There is an increasing emphasis on preserving the biodiversity of river catchment areas in recent years, as fish play a significant role in the food chain and the river's ecosystem. Fish species in the Sava River are experiencing pressure due to the construction of hydroelectric power plants, riverbed regulation, pollution, and uncontrolled fishing, all of which affect their survival.
The study also analyzes how fish species utilize different habitats within the river catchment, such as fast-flowing bodies of water, slower-flowing sections of the river, lakes, and ponds. These analyses investigate how these species adjust to various environmental conditions, such as changes in water temperature, food availability, and shelter.
Such research aids in understanding how ecosystems change and provides critical data for the conservation and management of fish populations in the Sava River catchment area.
