Data-driven platform to tackle marine plastic pollution

Short description of the action

Recycllux built a data-driven platform to tackle marine plastic pollution at every stage—from detection and collection to recycling and impact reporting.

We harness cutting-edge AI, Earth Observation, and blockchain technology to provide a transparent, efficient, and fully traceable system that leaves no part of the waste management cycle unaddressed. Our proprietary AI algorithms analyze Earth Observation satellite data to identify plastic waste spots. Then, our online portal, powered by blockchain, connects responsible companies and administrations, fishing vessels, NGOs, and recyclers to facilitate end-to-end cleanup interventions. We use blockchain to enable full chain of custody of marine plastic waste.

Recycllux offers something unique: a streamlined, comprehensive approach that orchestrates collaboration. Our platform empowers stakeholders to create meaningful environmental change with traceability at its core, ensuring each step in the cleanup and recycling process is accountable and efficient.

With the support of EIT Climate KIC, our technology is validated in an industrially relevant environment, with results published on the EC's Horizon Results Platform (https://ec.europa.eu/info/funding-tenders/opportunities/portal/screen/o…).

The project’s technology and methods are replicable across the Black Sea basin and beyond. Our data-
driven solution can adapt to various coastal areas, using local partnerships (for collection/recycling) to effectively tackle marine plastic waste.

Our efforts have been honored with multiple awards, including the 2024 Black Sea Common Maritime Agenda’s Project Award for Healthy Marine and Coastal Ecosystems. Success Story published by the Common Maritime Agenda for the Black Sea (https://black-sea-maritime-agenda.ec.europa.eu/recycllux-success-story-…).

Impact: Cleaning up plastic waste from the seas efficiently protects and preserves marine ecosystems, prevents the release of stored carbon, enhances the seas' ability to sequester CO2, and supports the Blue Economy – contributing to green transition. The use of digital tools enhances transparency and efficiency in waste management, fostering digital transition. Our initiatives also have social impacts by creating job opportunities in the coastal communities (e.g. fishermen).
