Our objective is to enhance understanding of the causes and issues related to marine pollution among individuals and communities, foster their willingness to find solutions to this problem, and encourage them to evaluate ongoing initiatives. As a first step of our project, we hosted students from
Başakşehir Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Fatih Sultan Mehmet Primary School at our school to conduct an Ocean Cleanup Code Hour Event, which combines artificial intelligence with combating
marine pollution, which provided us a way to create awareness for water pollution at a very young age. As part of a collaborative activity with Esenyurt Science and Art Center, located among the Blue Schools, a beach cleaning event will be organized at Büyükçekmece Beach, which raise awareness and instill desired behaviors in students through experiential learning. Moreover, we plan to organize a technical field trip to the Golden Horn to observe how the waste is cleaned. Before this trip, the documentary
"The Journey of Waste: How is the Golden Horn Cleaned?" will be screened for our students. They will create short films resembling public service announcements depicting the
environmental and societal damages that marine pollution will cause in the future. This way, they will be creative in the context of water pollution. As a next step, Students, along with academics
from Yildiz Technical University, analyze pollution samples brought from various water sources in laboratory settings which will carry the subject to a whole new level. Besides, in order to observe the Effects of Cruise Ships on Marine Pollution, our students will interview the personnel of the cruise ship arriving at Galataport, which will assist understand the factors contributing to pollution when the sea is used for travel purposes. Finally, our students will cerate a website to display every finding they will have for the public to see.
