The TireOut! Project,integrates circular economy principles in Tenerife's
educational sector by transforming marine waste, specifically recovered tires,into
educational furniture,decorations,and games.It studies links between marine litter
and factors like urbanization and tourism,reducing pollution,boosting
environmental education,and fostering community engagement.
Objectives: The project promotes open citizen science by connecting schools and
universities to research ocean health through a circular economy-based waste
management system,focusing on used car tires.Goals include training scholars
and families in citizen science,creating installations with recycled tires,raising
environmental awareness through workshops,and fostering collaboration among
schools,researchers,and the community.
Theoretical Framework: TireOut! introduces a cross-disciplinary citizen science
approach using data-driven reports from various groups to identify pollution
sources from used car tires on seabeds.Students,guided by teachers and families,
will collect data,while volunteer divers recover tires for study.The project applies
circular economy principles to tackle waste,build community resilience,and
design tailored pollution solutions.
Methodology:
1. On the complete map of the located tires,a fully distribution on areas of each
school is made according to their location.
2. In collaboration with local divers’community (CBUT,university diving club of
Tenerife,the location of abandoned tires on the sea beds will be located.
3. School students are trained in coastal data collection,with an open carry data
logger for them and their families when going to beaches.
4. Data on different beaches and coastal areas made by students are digitalized
and analyzed.
5. Partnering with local divers (CBUT) the project collects and decontaminates
tires, engaging students and educators in design workshops.
6. Construction workshops engage the community in creating the installations.
Continuous evaluations gather feedback and measure impact.
7. A complete map of found tires in seabeds and data collected are designed for
publication on scientific media.
Schedule:The project includes a 2-months design phase (05/2024-06/2024),a 12 months construction phase (07/2024-07/2025), and ongoing evaluations, ensuring
long-term impact and effectiveness.
