The students will be busy taking samples of various types of water. In order to allow an acceptable comparability of the results, sampling will be carried out every two months to have a representation of the evolution of the data as a function of time. The water samples identified relate to rivers in the Sulmona area
This work has the specific aims of analyzing the situation of watercourses. The analysis will be of two types:
1) Bacteriological analysis: Total coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal streptococci. The quantity of these microorganisms is directly connected to the flow rate of waste water introduced into the analysed watercourse, but to the self-purification and dilution capacity of the watercourse too. 2)Chemical analysis: Heavy metals, water temperature, pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, BOD, ammoniacal nitrogen, nitrous nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and phosphorus. These parameters are very important as they give an information of the quality of a watercourse. The presence of phosphorus and nitrogen is determined by the release of organic molecules into the environment and by the use of fertilizers; a high presence is a direct cause of eutrophication. BOD and dissolved oxygen are directly connected to the presence of organic substances deriving mainly from civil waste and temperature.
