The school participates in several international collaborations (Erasmus) with the Czech Republic, Bosnia, Poland, Spain and South Africa. Within this contact network, we contribute inspiration based on our experiences of our work with ocean awareness.

The primary objectives of the project We by the Baltic Sea is that Sunnadalsskolan will broaden the already existing work with ocean literacy and start to collaborate with Blekinge county museum in Karlskrona. This will be a natural continuation of work started many years ago.
There will be an exhibition at the museum with different aspects of the Baltic Sea using the student’s art works produced during creative classes.
There will also be a digital or physical exhibition at Museum of Wrecks in Stockholm (this being albeit not local, but the only “wreck museum” in Sweden).
Furthermore, we will develop our network of collaboration partners in the county to have more possible venues for our students' creations. This will enable increased distribution.
Our goal is to elevate the work and involve more teachers. Gradually, we want to reach a level and a self-image where the school, students, parents and staff have an awareness and a methodical competence that contributes to a marine environmental perspective, always highlighted in as many subjects as possible.
The aim is to develop new, creative ways for the students to make them connect with, and learn more about, the ocean. This can be especially challenging with so many students from other countries.

Background: Sunnadalskolan, Karlskrona, is an elementary school (class 0-9) with 350 students. 90 percent of the students have another mother tongue than Swedish. The school is situated in a suburban area, approx. 300 meters from the Baltic Sea.
For over 20 years, the school has had a collaboration with the Maritime Museum where students from year 5 learn about the maritime world heritage of our city, and how connected we are to this, right by the Baltic Sea. The students finished each year’s project by guiding their parents at the museum, proud of their new skills.
