- Water polution, dirty water purification
This project enables pupils to investigate ways of making dirty water cleaner through sieving and filtering and can also be used to explore ways of making water safe. At the same time the other objective of the project is knowing our responsibilities as a society to access clean water. Some countries like Africa lots of people don't have access to clean water. This project offers real life global context explore water quality, sieving and filtering investigations.
Students worked on "Filter to Cleaning Water" topic. Students were informed about the consequences of ongoing water pollution, emphasizing that many people still face challenges in accessing clean water. By discussing the reasons and outcomes of this situation, students were encouraged to generate ideas for solving this problem. A project was developed to design a filter that would purify contaminated water based on the students' ideas. In the science aspect of the study, students examined various samples of polluted water. They observed these samples under a microscope and measured their pH values. In library classes, they researched filter examples to gain ideas on how to design a filter. Subsequently, they formed groups to create draft drawings of their ideas and tested their products using provided materials. During this process, a conversation with Assoc. Prof. Hanife Sarı Erkan from Yıldız Technical University on water pollution and wastewater treatment was held, providing students with the opportunity to ask questions. Finally, filters with different layers were produced using recycled materials and tested. It was observed that the filters purified the contaminated water at different rates, leading to discussions on the reasons and consequences. The products were showcased to all other classes and school parents. Students explained the project process to participants visiting the exhibition.
