Our project – A little more blue - Raiz helps to save the sea – intends to develop a number of actions regarding ocean literacy and concrete actions to help to save the ocean. Our main objective is to clean one of the beaches near by our school: Praia de Algés/Cruz Quebrada. We will organize several clean ups with our students – from kindergarten to Middle school - and the whole school community. The children will make, for example, an exhibition to call attention to the pollution of the oceans with materials they collect from the clean ups. Our idea is to contribute to requalifying that beach, for it to become a place were people want to go.
The children are already working on a campaign to collect bottle caps to make the base of a mural that will be mobile to call attention to the pollution of the seas. In Raiz we have two buildings and the campaign is happening on both locations. The idea is that the caps are the base of the mural. We are part of the community Escola Azul Portugal and we are developing this mural also to celebrate the Escola Azul Day, that happens on the 20th of may 2024.
In our clean ups of the beach we intend to also observe sea life with the help of our partners. The children have decided to have a contest to see witch class collects the most trash. The prize will be a trophy made with recycled materials.
They decided they want to built rubbish bins to put in specific parts of the beach. They also want to built ashtrays to put on the beach and to help to put an end to the scourge of cigarette butts.
They want to make a song/ anthem about protecting the oceans.
They want to create a “fines book” to give people fines if they pollute the beach.
…
The children are very much involved in this project! All the ideas came from them. They are (and their families) actively contributing to our first campaign. And eager to do more!
