The Africa for Sustainable Ocean Initiative (ASOI) is a multi-country initiative especially for countries in the Gulf of Guinea with the main objective of raising the consciousness of African coastal and vulnerable communities, especially women and youths on sustainable Ocean economy development, sustainable livelihoods, ocean literacy, climate education especially as it relates with the ocean through an inclusive and participatory process. The initiative is expected to impact positively on the locals and the continent at large. The locals whose sources of livelihood depends on the Ocean as most are fishermen and fish processors who due to insecurities and effects of degraded marine environments in the Gulf of Guinea has lost their sources of livelihoods will be trained on other sustainable means of livelihood such as aquaculture and shrimp farming. This initiative is intentional to achieving a more ocean and climate literate Africa. The initiative will significantly curb the problems of marine pollution through her regular marine litter clean up exercises, clean Ocean campaigns and awareness programmes. It will also highlight the importance of nature based ocean solutions to climate change such as protection and restoration of depleted mangrove forests and wetlands. The ASOI initiative will also promote ocean and climate literacy through setting up ocean clubs in secondary schools with the intent of achieving higher ocean literacy by 2030 and achieving the Africa we want.
