Description

Our project idea is to write and illustrate sea anecdotes for children. The ocean is teeming with fairytale-like creatures whose fantastic worlds are nevertheless true. We aim to create a book that emancipates a new generation of ocean stewards, where young people’s spirit of discovery is nurtured by captivating ocean protagonists who, for instance, illuminate tides, possess three hearts, or a hauntingly transparent head. In each story, our magical yet true sea heroes are illustrated and social as well as climate science issues are literarily woven in.
Our target audience is especially young readers but similarly engaged family members or educators who are enthralled by sciences-based short stories on oceanic phenomena. Children carry curiosity and enthusiasm for learning that is precious for much-needed Ocean Literacy. We must have the young generation on board to protect the mystical worlds of the seas and their immeasurable value to humanity.
Scientifically, the merits of engaging communication and captivating fiction to protect the global oceans have often been highlighted. The need to reconnect people emotionally to the ocean has been equally stressed. We want to address limited understanding of the ocean and its creatures and functioning by giving them a voice. Similarly, we want to touch upon the concepts of Ocean Justice and the Common Heritage Principls and harness the iconic power of the sea whilst forging a sense of responsibility.
