Description

The purpose of my project is to fill the knowledge gap regarding permafrost coastal erosion mechanisms in the Arctic, particularly emphasizing hydrodynamic forces often overlooked in existing research. Through comprehensive investigations along the Yukon coast, I aim to develop a detailed bathymetric dataset, conduct vulnerability assessments of coastal flooding, and monitor changes in erosion-prone areas affected by storm surges and sea level rise. Beneficiaries include Indigenous communities, local decision-makers, navigational authorities, and scientists studying Arctic environmental changes. My activities involve field surveys using research boats, remote sensing data analysis of the Western Canadian Arctic waters, and modeling efforts to enhance navigational safety and inform local decision-making. Furthermore, community-based research plays a crucial role in my study to gather qualitative data and provide an updated bathymetric map. This is especially important for Indigenous communities reliant on marine resources for subsistence. My study commenced last year with data collection and analysis, followed by preliminary modeling and vulnerability assessments, and is scheduled to conclude in December 2025 with the dissemination of findings to stakeholders.
