Mission Ocean at University of Southern Denmark and Blue SDU

Short description of the action

University of Southern Denmark (SDU) is a leader in diverse blue research fields, encompassing marine ecology, the blue economy, maritime safety and health, law of the sea, and cutting-edge maritime technology and digital solutions. SDU adopts an interdisciplinary approach, emphasising community-driven strategies and citizen science. By partnering with local citizens, stakeholders and authorities, SDU endorses effective management, governance, and informed decision-making. SDU facilitates the Danish Mission Ocean hub, together with the Danish Ministry of Research and Higher Education, a community promoting the Mission objectives and fostering knowledge sharing and collaboration between stakeholders in the Mission Ocean. By open science policy SDU supports the EU Ocean knowledge system and FAIR principle regarding knowledge and data.
SDU actively promotes the objectives of the Mission Ocean:
Via decades of experience in advocating the protection and restoration of marine and freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, and battling challenges with invasive species. Our research centres around assessing the intricate relationships between biodiversity, ecological state and function of the environments and their associated ecosystem services following disturbances (both natural and anthropogenic) and restoration and protection. We have a proven track record of successfully restoring essential habitats in both marine and freshwater ecosystems, contributing to improved ecological conditions, recovery of biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and supported ecosystem services.
By promoting the prevention and elimination of pollution in ocean, and waters, with cutting edge research focusing on ecotoxicology and hormone disruption.
Through several research, dissemination, strategic coordination and community driven activities SDU work on the development of a sustainable blue economy that is carbon-neutral and circular, in fields as maritime law, biotech, maritime technology, low trophic aquaculture, entrepreneurship, digital solutions, community and citizen engagement and monitoring of the green transition at sea.
