The initiative to operationalize this theme seeks to guide and operationalize strategic actions capable of protecting the oceans. UNESCO has defined 7 principles promoting ocean literacy. Our intention is operationalize the following: "Principle 6. The ocean and humanity are strongly interconnected."
The guiding questions are: “What trash do we find on the beaches near us? What are the consequences of this waste on marine ecosystems? "What plastics do we use at school? How can we replace or eliminate it?".
Objectives:
- Promote sustainable actions aimed at the conservation and preservation of the oceans linking to curriculum of various subjects at different levels/ cycles/ school years;
- Develop ocean literacy, based on the values of sustainability and the need to protect marine biodiversity by presenting solutions;
- Participate in environmental activism actions, making commitments and involving the community;
- Streamline laboratory activities based on elements collected from field trips, proceeding to the data analysis.
The initiatives to be carried out are based on active learning methodologies, in which the student has a primary role in the process, giving him greater participation and autonomy. Students began to verbalize their concerns about excess plastic in the school. These concerns triggered the need to develop concrete actions that were included in the curriculum. In order to carry out a more consistent work in the operationalization of the theme, the following strategies/activities were defined:
-Conducting study visits / field trips, for direct observation of pollution on the beaches and collection of marine litter and natural elements for laboratory analysis;
-Participation in Pedagogical Workshops held internally and externally;
-Promotion of meetings with specialists / writers animators;
-Viewing of documentaries on ocean literacy;
-Audits of the presence of plastic in the school, in order to eliminate some plastic items;
-Promotion of awareness campaigns for ocean pollution.
