- Description
My event includes 4 science demonstrations 1Effects of trawling on sea organisms Artificial oceanic environment ->sea vegetation is represented by rubber bands and fish by objects floating at different depths. In this environment we demonstrate how trawling indiscriminately catches any sea organism that can’t fit through the net holes and destroys sea vegetation 2 Effect of ocean acidification on calcifers With ocean acidification the shells of calcifer organisms are destroyed. Place a raw egg in the jar and cover with vinegarBubbles on the eggshell -> acid in the vinegar reacting with the calcium carbonate in the shell. This reaction is producing carbon dioxideAfter 48 hours, remove the egg and rinse it off.The hard outer shell is gone and the egg white and yolk are surrounded by a thin membrane.3 Eutrophication In this water science experiment, kids add liquid plant fertilizer to pond water. They add 5 drops of fertilizer to the 1st jar, 10 -> 2nd jar and 15 -> 3rd jar and they keep the 4th jar as control. All the jars stay in equal sunlight for 3 weeks.4 Importance of sea vegetation coastal protection A tank which consists of a coast and rubber bands that represent sea vegetation. We manually produce waves when the rubber bands are on the ocean floor, when they are collected on the shore and when there is no vegetation. In the case that there is no vegetation the effects of the waves are larger while when there is vegetation the waves are inhibited.
