My project is at concept stage and revolves around linking the problem of organic waste being produced by the tuna industry in Malta with creating a bioplastic for the packaging industries. The main objective of my project is to bring together the tuna industry with the appropriate packaging industry to develop a suitable bioplastic. The activities that will be implemented to achieve this objective include: (i) a literature review and an intellectual property search, (ii) engaging with the Maltese aqua cultural industry, (iii) engaging with the plastic importers / manufacturers and lastly (iv) developing a functioning prototype. Through these activities I will be converting a source of a major problem here in Malta into a solution for another global problem. In order for me to this I need to make sure that this substitute is inexpensive and available to the packaging industries, that it is biodegradable and biocompatible and that it is durable.
