- Description
The main objective of this project is the preparation needed to clean up our coastline which is still littered with debris, both blown and washed there by hurricane Irma. This is achieved by training and certifying Sint Maarten youths (age of 16-30) in the scuba diving skills needed to undertake underwater surveys, mapping, and removal of small debris. These youths will be able to apply these skills to future underwater projects as well as towards employment in the marine sector. This project is having and will have an extremely positive impact as St. Maarten citizens are going to benefit from a coastline free of Irma debris and single-use plastic pollution, from those who personally utilize our coastline for sport and recreation to those who derive their income, directly and indirectly, from the marine sector and the tourists who choose to come to Sint Maarten to enjoy this natural asset of ours. As well as the Marine life that will thrive from a cleaner environment. The project started in 2021, as our team was the first trained divers to have participated in the SXM coastal clean-up. We as a team are committed to continuing our advocacy for the conservation of our Ocean, therefore we intend to continue doing the coastal clean-up of our island. The contributors of this project are SXM Coastal CleanUp and Kids At Sea Foundation.
