Clean Boating is an initiative, created in summer 2020 and registered as an NGO in December. Its goal is to involve private boaters and nautical charter companies to actively remove plastic litter from the seas. For that purpose, the boats are provided with buckets and nets, to fish out the floating plastic, they find when they go out on their boating excursions. Special bins have been provided for the collected marine plastic litter. The project is ongoing and plans to expand its activities across the island of Mallorca and beyond, as far into the future as possible. The founding members were Sea Teach, a small sea school who created the idea, the charter companies in the port of Cala d’Or and the townhall of Santanyí, who all helped develop the association and helped by financing the nets and buckets for the collection of the trash and the special bins in the port. The middle term goal, though 2021, is to expand this initiative to all the recreational ports in Mallorca and the Balearic Islands. The long-term goal will be to establish a circular economy model, including recollection, sorting and transport enterprises, specialised investigation and technology centres, plastic recycling centres and leisure boat construction companies; to produce products out of the recycled marine plastic. This recycled plastic can be used to make products that can help further recollecting of plastic litter, as well as accessories for boating or parts in the construction of new boats
