News: Learn how the EU Algae Initiative supports fishers transitioning to seaweed farming on Euronews Green Ocean series

With declining fish stocks, the EU promotes seaweed farming as a sustainable and lucrative alternative for coastal communities.

Despite extensive marine management efforts, Europe's fish stocks remain under pressure. The European Union is now supporting fishers in transitioning to seaweed farming through the EU Algae Initiative, offering a sustainable alternative livelihood. This shift not only provides a new income source but also aids in ocean biodiversity recovery and sustainable seafood production.

The EU Algae Initiative funds pilot projects and provides financial support and training to help fishers embrace seaweed farming. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to grow the European algae industry, which is expected to reach €9 billion by 2030. The demand for seaweed is surging in various sectors, including food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and energy.

At the "Seaposium-24" conference in Ireland, Felix Leinemann, Head of Unit for Blue Economy Sectors, Aquaculture, and Maritime Spatial Planning at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), highlighted the benefits of the initiative. He emphasised the ideal conditions of the Atlantic and North Sea for seaweed cultivation and the importance of leveraging fishers' maritime knowledge for this new venture.

“The demand can be six times as much within this decade. So, it's necessary that we also produce our own seaweed. The Atlantic or the North Sea are ideal conditions for cultivating seaweed”, Felix stated.

The EU Algae Initiative presents a promising opportunity for fishers to diversify their activities and incomes through sustainable seaweed farming, helping to alleviate pressure on fish stocks while contributing to environmental conservation and the blue economy.
