News: Check out the Latest Update on the EU4Algae Knowledge Library!

Discover the latest update in the EU4Algae Knowledge Library, where we put the spotlight on regenerative aquaculture.

Published in 2023, research by scientists from The Nature Conservancy (TNC) showcases how regenerative aquaculture is emerging as a sustainable solution to address environmental and food security challenges. By farming species like bivalves and seaweed, which require minimal inputs and provide significant ecological benefits, this approach can regenerate ocean health while supporting coastal economies.

Key takeaways and breakthroughs include:

  1. Showcasing guiding principles on how TNC and partners have developed principles for regenerative aquaculture, including appropriate site selection, species that provide intended environmental outcomes, and management practices that support local ecosystems.

  1. Highlighting how the global potential and economic impact of using this approach could significantly increase food production and economic returns while improving ocean health and is cost-effective compared to traditional environmental regenerative methods and can generate significant revenue through nutrient removal and habitat creation.

  1. Emphasising how the climate impact is limited given the integration of climate-friendly practices and infrastructure can further reduce the aquaculture sector's climate impact because regenerative aquaculture (especially with seaweed and bivalves) has the potential to achieve net-zero or even net-positive greenhouse gas emissions.

  1. Demonstrating the successful implementation of case studies and local benefits of this approach e.g., China, Belize, and the United States and how improvements in the quality of water, alternative livelihoods, and habitat regeneration have been confirmed.

  1. Pointing out the scaling and future directions in terms of spotlighting the need for coordinated efforts by governments, international organisations, and investors to scale regenerative aquaculture for significant global impact and how it is a crucial strategy to meet the food and employment needs of a growing global population while ensuring environmental sustainability.
