Maritime Spatial Planning DirectiveDirective 2014/89/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 July 2014 establishing a framework for maritime spatial planningThis directive requires EU member states to develop plans that coordinate the spatial use of marine waters to ensure they are used sustainably. The directive promotes the sustainable use of marine resources, including space for renewable energy projects like offshore wind farms. This can create synergies with the aquaculture and fisheries sectors, enabling the integration of renewable energy sources into their operations and supporting the broader energy transition.

In aquaculture and fisheries, the circular economy principles encourage the reduction of waste and the reuse of materials, which can lead to energy savings. For example, by recycling fish waste into biofuels or using by-products in other industries, the sector can contribute to energy efficiency and the broader energy transition.
Emissions Trading System (ETS)Consolidated text: Directive 2003/87/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 October 2003 establishing a system for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading within the Union and amending Council Directive 96/61/EC (Text with EEA relevance)Text with EEA relevanceThe EU ETS is a market-based approach to controlling greenhouse gas emissions by providing economic incentives for reducing emissions.
Reducing emissions from the shipping sectorWhile fisheries are not directly covered by the ETS, the directive influences the energy sector, indirectly impacting energy prices and the cost-effectiveness of adopting low-carbon technologies in aquaculture and fisheries. Additionally, the ETS drives innovation in carbon-efficient practices and technologies, which can be adapted by the sector.
