EMODnet chemistry group discuss how to support the Marine Strategy Framework Directive

Assessing the environmental health of European seas requires knowledge of chemical concentrations of pollutants and nutrients in the seawater, on the seabed and in sea-life. The EMODnet thematic group for chemistry gather together the necessary primary data in order to provide inputs for these assessments. A workshop in Split, Croatia, assessed progress

The participants proposed several possible ways that the EMODnet Chemistry services could provide this information. But it is not yet possible to formulate clear guidelines as to which parameters and which data products should be required and delivered for supporting MSFD implementation.

It was decided that "use cases" will be set up in coordination with the ongoing projects including IRIS-SES and MISIS as well as Regional Sea Convention activities. EMODnet Chemistry will provide data layers that its users need.

EMODNet Chemistry will stay in close contact with regional chemistry experts and other stakeholders (European Environment Agency, regional sea conventions, Member States) to fine-tune its approach. The next step will be a discussion with a small working group in Brussels in September.
